In June 2007, Royal Philips Electronics, a leader in the lighting industry, acquired Burnaby, BC-based, TIR Systems Ltd. as a key part of its strategy to establish a long term global leadership position in Solid State Lighting (SSL).

In addition to establishing itself as an early leader in SSL by providing high quality LED-based products into the architectural lighting and corporate identity markets, TIR had successfully developed a range of cutting edge SSL technologies supported by a substantial intellectual property portfolio that is now being expanded into Philips product portfolio.

Philips is currently building a new business selling integrated SSL modules to light fixture manufacturers as a replacement for conventional light sources. TIR pioneered this revolutionary approach to SSL with the introduction of its award winning Lexel technology that combines both hardware and software to create a multi-purpose intelligent light source that may one day form the basis of a new standard in lighting.

The coloured lighting on background walls and the overhead barrel vault windows is a product of programmable LED technology. The concealed light source allows for a continuous sheet of light to ‘wash’ the Showcase’s many coves and surfaces. This architectural lighting was supplied by Philips, using a technology developed by the former TIR Lighting of Burnaby.
