Government Organizations
All levels of government (federal, provincial, and municipal) are involved in funding the 2010 Winter Games. Key partners include:
Government of Canada: 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Federal Secretariat
The 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Federal Secretariat (Federal Secretariat) is a division of the Department of Canadian Heritage and supports intergovernmental engagement in 2010 and related initiatives. They are working to promote awareness and facilitate access to Games-related business and procurement opportunities available to Canadian entrepreneurs and businesses.
Contracting opportunities on behalf of the Government of Canada are published on MERX. MERX describes itself as the most complete source of public tenders and private construction available in Canada. It strives to level the playing field so that businesses of any size can have easy and affordable access to billions of dollars in contracting opportunities with the federal government, participating provincial, municipal governments and the private sector. It is important to note that MERX is operated by a private company and there are fees to use some advanced features of the system.
Province of British Columbia: BC 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat
The BC 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat (BC Secretariat) is the Provincial agency responsible for overseeing British Columbia’s financial commitments and ensuring British Columbia’s vision for these Games is achieved. The Province has committed $600 million to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, venue construction, endowments and legacies. They also have a key role in ensuring the sustainable economic opportunities associated with hosting the Games are identified early and realized before, during and after the 2010. It is a key goal that these opportunities evolve into enduring legacies for communities and businesses around the Province.
The Province of British Columbia uses the Internet to post and solicit bids for supplying goods and services to its ministries as well as many crown corporations (e.g. BC Hydro) and provincial agencies (e.g. BC Housing Authority). BC Bid is an electronic network that gives you “one window” access to information about selling to government.
Host Cities
The Host City of Vancouver and Host Mountain Resort of Whistler also have responsibility for venue construction and other major infrastructure projects. In many cases, these municipalities will be buying goods and services to support their involvement in the Games.
Many municipalities within B.C. post their bid opportunities on the BC Bid website. In terms of Games-related opportunities at the municipal level, the 2010 Commerce Centre will list the opportunities available to businesses. However, organizations may want to check out the individual municipal websites as well to see if there may be similar or related opportunities.
Venue Cities
The Venue Municipalities of Richmond, Surrey and West Vancouver also have responsibility for venue construction and other Games-related infrastructure. These municipalities will also be buying goods and services to support their involvement in the 2010 Winter Games.
Contributing Provinces
There are now six contributing provinces to the 2010 Winter Games. Each province uses a slightly different method to publish their procurement opportunities. These processes are outlined below.
Organizations can connect themselves to Games-related opportunities including those from government partners by registering for 2010 Commerce Centre programs and services and browsing the business opportunities section of this website.
